IB Geography Textbooks and Wider Reading and Viewing
IB Geography Textbooks and Wider Reading
Most schools will give students a general Geography textbook (my school currently gives students the Geography Course Companion). However, it is important to use as many sources as possible to giver a broader understanding. Below are a list of books that I have used in the past and can be found in many classrooms, school libraries or local libraries. It is also possible to buy nearly all of these books off online retailers like Amazon.
General Textbooks
Planet Geography by Stephen Codrington
Geography: An integrated approach by David Waugh
Geography Course Companion by Garrett Nagle and Briony Cooke
Geography IB Study Guide by Garrett Nagle and Briony Cooke
Advanced Geography by Garrett Nagle
Textbooks for the Core Themes
Geography for the IB Diploma - Patterns and Change by Paul Guinness
Population, Resources and Development by Jane Chrispin and Francis Jegede
Access to Geography - Migration by Paul Guinness
Access to Geography - Development by Garrett Nagle
Access to Geography - Population by Jack Gillett
Access to Geography - Economic Activity and Change by Paul Sheppard
EPICS - Development, Globalisation and Sustainability by John Morgan
Textbooks for Optional Themes
When studying the optional themes, I think it is essential that you also use a more specialised textbook, rather than relying on your general textbook. General textbooks may give a general introduction into theory, but rarely give the case study knowledge that you will require in your examinations.
Freshwater - Issues and Conflict
Water Resources: Process and Management by Victoria Bishop and Robert Prosser
Access to Geography - Rivers and Water Management by Garrett Nagle
Advanced Topic Masters - Rivers by Michael Raw
Hazards and Disasters - Risk Assessment and Response
Hazards and Responses by Victoria Bishop
Access to Geography - Hazards by Malcolm Skinner
Advanced Topic Masters - Weather and Hazards by Micahel Raw
Leisure, Sport and Tourism
Leisure, Recreation and Tourism by Robert Prosser
Access to Geography - Tourism and Recreation by Jane Dove
Access to Geography - The Geography of Sport and Leisure by Stuart Terrell
EPICS - The Geography of Sport and Leisure by Michael Witherwick and Sue Warn
Focus on Geography: Tourism, Leisure and Recreation by Garret Nagle
Textbooks for Global Interactions
Geography for the IB Diploma - Global Interactions by Paul Guinness
Access to Geography - Globalisation by Paul Guinness
EPICS - Development, Globalisation and Sustainability by John Morgan
Advanced Topic Master - Globalisation by Dr. S Oakes and Michael Raw
News Organisations
The IB like all case studies to be contemporary (within a students' lifetime). They also like you to make connections between topics and to see the pertinence of topics that you are being taught in the classroom. One of the best ways to do this is either to watch the news or to read the internet sites of news organisations. Throughout the wiki there are many links to these internet sites, but if you want to surf yourself, some of the best sites are:
Catch up with some of the latest geographical news at the Greenfieldgeography Blog: Greenfieldgeography Blog
Wider Reading Non-fiction
As well as reading textbooks and looking at articles on internet sites, it can also be interesting and informative to read non-fiction books. Below are a list of books that I have read, and DVDs that I have watched, enjoyed and found useful and relevant to the IB Geography course.
